Sunan Ibn Majah (سنن ابن ماجه)

Introduction

Sunan Ibn Majah is from one of the six most trusted Hadith collections in Islam, collectively known as the Kutub al-Sittah. It is particularly valued for including Hadiths that are not found in the other five books, offering unique insights into Islamic teachings and legal rulings. While some narrations within the book have faced criticism regarding authenticity, the compilation remains a crucial source for scholars studying Islamic jurisprudence, social behavior, and ethical principles.

The book serves both as a complement and as an extension of earlier Hadith works. It has been referenced for centuries in various fields of Islamic law and theology, despite occasional scholarly debates about certain narrators included in the chains.

About Imam Ibn Majah

Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Yazid Ibn Majah al-Qazwini was born in 824 CE (209 AH) in the city of Qazvin, located in present-day Iran. He grew up in a family and region known for scholarship, which played a crucial role in shaping his early intellectual development. From a young age, he exhibited a strong interest in Hadith, dedicating himself to memorization, critical study, and narration with exceptional zeal. This commitment set the foundation for his lifelong contribution to Islamic sciences.

In pursuit of authentic knowledge, Ibn Majah undertook extensive travels to major centers of learning across the Islamic world. His journeys took him to Baghdad, Basra, Makkah, Madinah, Damascus, Egypt, and Khurasan, where he studied under some of the most distinguished Hadith authorities of his time. These experiences not only enriched his understanding but also allowed him to verify Hadith chains directly from reputable sources, enhancing the reliability of his own collection.

Though he lived in the era of other great Hadith compilers like Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, Ibn Majah carved a distinct place for himself by focusing on narrations often overlooked by others. His scholarly peers acknowledged his dedication, accuracy in transmission, and deep respect for the traditions of the Prophet ﷺ. His methodical approach, balanced by humility and sincerity, earned him a respected reputation in Hadith circles, even among those who later critiqued some of the narrations in his work.

Ibn Majah passed away in 887 CE (273 AH), leaving behind his greatest contribution—Sunan Ibn Majah, a Hadith collection that would be recognized as one of the six most accurate books of Islam. Despite not achieving the same fame as some of his contemporaries, his compilation enriched the Hadith tradition by offering narrations that broadened scholarly discourse. Today, his work continues to be studied and referenced by scholars and students worldwide.

Compilation Method

Sunan Ibn Majah contains approximately 4,341 Hadiths in total, and around 3,002 without repetitions. It is divided into 37 books (kutub), further subdivided into chapters according to subject matter. The compiler aimed to collect a broad range of narrations, including many not found in the other five canonical Hadith books, which makes his work both valuable and occasionally controversial.

Key features of his methodology include:

  • Inclusion of Hadiths not found in the other five canonical collections
  • Topical arrangement by legal and ethical themes
  • Some narrations with weak or disputed chains, noted by later Hadith critics
  • Emphasis on both jurisprudence and daily Islamic ethics

Although he did not categorize Hadiths by strength in the text (as al-Tirmidhi did), his work laid a foundation for later scholars to examine and grade each narration.

Subjects Covered in Sunan Ibn Majah

The Hadiths in Sunan Ibn Majah span a wide array of Islamic teachings and everyday matters. The main subject areas include:

  • Belief: Topics like monotheism, the unseen, divine decree, and Day of Judgment sign.
  • Worship: Rituals such as prayer, fasting, zakat, and Hajj with detailed narrations.
  • Personal Conduct: Morals like honesty, patience, humility, charity, and kindness.
  • Family and Society: Guidance on marriage, divorce, inheritance and social justice.
  • Business and Transactions: Ethics and rules governing trade and financial dealings.
  • Legal Matters: Judicial processes, punishments, and witness requirements.
  • Virtues and Warnings: Encouragement for good deeds and caution against prohibited actions.

Status and Acceptance

Among the six books of Kutub al-Sittah, Sunan Ibn Majah is often listed sixth in terms of scholarly acceptance. Its inclusion in the canonical six is mainly due to the unique narrations it offers. While some Hadith scholars—such as Ibn Hajar and Al-Nawawi—raised concerns about certain weak narrators, others like Al-Dhahabi appreciated its broader contribution to Hadith literature.

Despite its criticism, the collection is invaluable for its supplementary content and is frequently cited in Islamic jurisprudence, especially in comparative fiqh discussions.
